Assoc. Prof. Madara Auzenbaha

Assoc. Prof. Dr. med. Madara Auzenbaha has devoted her career to the field of rare diseases. She works at the Children's Clinical University Hospital (BKUS) in Riga, where she heads the Rare Diseases Coordination Centre, supporting patients and families, coordinating multidisciplinary care, and strengthening national rare disease services. She is also a leading researcher at the Scientific Laboratory of Molecular Genetics, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU), and Associate Professor at the Department of Biology and Microbiology.
Her main areas of expertise include inherited metabolic disorders, particularly phenylketonuria (PKU) and newborn screening.
In addition to her clinical and academic responsibilities, Dr. Auzenbaha serves as the Chief Specialist for Rare Diseases at the Ministry of Health of Latvia, contributing to national health policy and strategic planning in the field of rare diseases. She is actively involved in numerous international collaborations and projects, including the European Reference Networks, which enable Latvia to integrate best practices and knowledge exchange across borders.
As a lecturer, Dr. Auzenbaha is actively engaged in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at Rīga Stradiņš University, delivering lectures and seminars for medical students, residents, and continuing education programmes for physicians. She is widely recognised for her role in bridging clinical practice, scientific research, and health system development in the field of rare diseases.
